London Documentary Wedding Photography
for Camera-Shy Couples
If the thought of posing makes you wince, you’re in the right place.
Relax. I’ve Got This.
Hate having your photo taken? All good. You’re exactly who I work with best.
I’m Michael. I’ve been photographing London weddings for 14 years, and I’ve heard some version of “I’m terrible in front of a camera” more times than I can count. It’s almost always the same people who message me six weeks later saying they can’t believe how good the photos are.
That’s not luck. That’s the approach.
“Neither of us like being in front of a camera but Michael put us at ease and gave us some direction — we are so happy with the results.” — Izzy, 2026 (Hitched)
My job isn’t to direct you into poses and drag you around the venue all day. It’s to watch, anticipate, and be in the right place at the right moment — then occasionally pull you aside for ten minutes, make something properly beautiful happen, and get you straight back to your guests.
The result is a gallery that looks like your wedding actually was. Not a version of it that existed only for the camera.
Four Hitched Wedding Awards in a row. BIPP qualified. But the reviews will tell you more than any badge.
What couples say
As two people who are unsure of what to do in front of a camera, Michael made us feel comfortable and gave us direction.
“We were quite unsure about how things should go and a little uncomfortable in front of the camera but Michael’s direction really helped us. On the day we felt so relaxed and all our pictures reflect how happy we were which is exactly what we wanted“

The best first step is a quick conversation. Tell me about your day, I’ll tell you how I work, and we’ll know pretty quickly whether it’s a yes.
No hard sell. No pressure. Just a proper chat.
Questions about your Wedding Photography
Q: What style of wedding photography do you specialise in?
A: I specialise in documentary and editorial-style wedding photography — which means I focus on capturing real moments, genuine emotions and the natural energy of your day rather than stiff, posed shots. Think of it as your wedding story told honestly, with a creative eye for beautiful light and authentic connections. The result is images that feel alive, not staged.
Q: I hate having my photo taken — can you still make this work for me?
A: Absolutely — and you’re not alone in feeling that way! A big part of my approach is about making you forget the camera is even there. I work to create a relaxed, low-pressure atmosphere so that what comes through in your photos is how happy you actually were, not how nervous you felt. Many of my couples say the same thing before their wedding, and they’re always surprised by how natural and at ease they look in their photos.
Q: Are you based in London, and do you travel for weddings?
A: Yes, I’m London-based and I photograph weddings across London, the South East and beyond. I’ve worked at a wide range of London venues including Old Marylebone Town Hall, Chelsea Old Town Hall and Morden Park House, as well as further afield — from Cornwall to Hampshire. If you’re planning a wedding outside London, just get in touch and we can chat about what’s involved.
Q: How experienced are you as a wedding photographer?
A: I’ve been photographing weddings for 14 years and have covered more than 400 weddings across 50+ venues. I’m also a Licentiate member of the BIPP (British Institute of Professional Photographers), which means I’ve achieved a recognised professional standard — so you can book with confidence. I’ve also won the Hitched Wedding Awards four years running, from 2023 through to 2026.
Q: What makes you different from other London wedding photographers?
A: Honestly? I’d rather show you than tell you — go look at the full wedding galleries and you’ll get a feel for it pretty quickly. But if you want the short version: I care about making you feel comfortable above everything else. The editorial eye, the 14 years of experience, the BIPP qualification — all of that matters. But none of it counts for much if you spend your wedding day feeling awkward in front of a camera. That’s the thing I’m most focused on solving.
Q: Can I see full wedding galleries rather than just highlight shots?
A: Yes — and I’d actively encourage it. Highlight reels can look impressive but they don’t tell you much about consistency. On my Real Weddings pages you can see full sets of images from actual weddings, giving you a proper sense of what you’d receive from your own day. Head to the Weddings section of my website to explore.
Q: How soon after the wedding will I receive my photos?
A: You’ll get a sneak peek — five images — the morning after your wedding, while you’re still on a high from the day before. The full gallery follows within four to six weeks. If you’re on The Full Story package, we then book a separate session to go through everything together and design your album. That takes around three weeks from consultation to collection.
Q: Do you offer an engagement shoot before the wedding?
A: Yes, and it’s something I really value. An engagement shoot is a great way for us to get comfortable working together before your big day — it means by the time your wedding arrives, you already know how I work and you’ve had a chance to relax in front of the camera. It’s included in some of my packages, so it’s worth asking about when we chat.
London Wedding Photographer: Michael Willatt Photography
I photograph weddings across London and the South East — from Old Marylebone Town Hall and Chelsea Old Town Hall to barn venues in Hampshire and country houses beyond the M25. If you’re planning a London wedding and want photography that feels real rather than rehearsed, I’d love to hear about your day.
